New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
